Appalachian Regional Healthcare

April, 1997 through 1998

For Appalachian Regional Healthcare, Inc., RKI provided guidance and facilitation for a visioning team that planned and implemented a remarkable vision development strategy for the whole company. The company included more than 5,000 employees at multiple sites. Every employee had an opportunity to participate in small, facilitated work-time groups that identified the essential values that should underpin the vision for the organization. The president appointed the Visioning Team as a kind of core sample of employees from different levels and different sites, and charged them to go beyond gathering information and opinion from employees. The Team accepted the challenge of using a structured listening process to cultivate employees' interest in taking increased ownership for their work and their work satisfaction. The Visioning Team ultimately created and managed a system of listening that engaged hundreds of small groups within the corporation in considering and agreeing on core values. RKI completed our assistance to the Visioning Team once the listening process concluded. The Visioning Team completed the analysis of the hundreds of sessions on time, and presented recommendations to the board.
