Fayette County Public Schools – Worker Warranty Steering Committee

Fall, 1996

For the Fayette County Public Schools Worker Warranty Steering Committee (Lexington, Kentucky), Rona conducted focus groups with students, educators, parents, and business people. These focus groups sought to determine early reactions to criteria for affixing an employment-oriented warranty to the diplomas of high school students who complete certain optional conditions. The idea of a worker warranty proved to be an excellent way to have conversations about students and work.

RKI used the structure of these groups – with students in a separate session – as a second opportunity to test the theory that student groups should have student facilitators. Long-time RKI friend Tulani Grundy, at that time a student at Spellman College, learned how to conduct focus groups and facilitated the student session. The comfort level the students held came through in the audiotapes and transcripts of the session and underscored the positive aspects of training young facilitators to conduct groups with young people.
